Distinguished by its absence of the traditional corrugated steel roof, open-top containers feature removable bows and a weather-resistant tarpaulin, secured with ropes. This design facilitates easy loading and unloading, typically performed via crane from above. Additionally, the door header can be swung around or removed, simplifying cargo access.

Renowned for their suitability in transporting machinery, open-top containers must be shipped with their bows and tarpaulin intact, providing structural support. For oversized machinery, a flat rack container, devoid of a roof, may be necessary. Equipped with lashing rings, these containers ensure secure cargo transport.
